Located in western Africa is the Republic of Ghana. It shares it boundaries with Ivory Coast in the west, Togo in the east, Burkina Faso in the north and the Gulf of Guinea in the south. A number of ancient kingdoms ruled over the country before the colonial rulers came in. There was intense trade with the Europeans states especially Portuguese in the 15th century. The British established a crown Colony, the Gold Coast in 1874. The country achieved independence is 1957 and was known as Ghana. Though there was a parliamentarian government in force when the country achieved independence, the country has witnessed alternating military and civilian rule.
